The social enterprise WeHub! Lake Victoria Ltd with the brand name WeTu, founded by the SIEMENS Foundation, supplies the population along Lake Victoria with energy and drinking water.
In the Lake Victoria region, only just under 35 percent of the Kenyan population has access to clean drinking water, and only 20 percent is connected to a central energy grid. (Source: https://www.siemens-stiftung.org)
Therefore, WeTu operates hubs on site, whose energy demand is fed by photovoltaics, in order to be able to lend solar-powered fishing lanterns and to sell clean drinking water to the population.
There are 4 plants of the manufacturer SolarSpring GmbH for water treatment of turbid and microbiologically contaminated water.
Technical data of the plants:
Raw water: rivers, lakes, springs, boreholes and contaminated tap water.
Water quality: retention up to 99,999% of microorganisms, bacteria and viruses
Nominal flow rate: 500 l/h
Each unit includes the following 4 stages, all installed in one unit:
Stage 1: Automatic disc filter
Stage 2: Ultrafiltration membrane module
Stage 3: Activated carbon filter
Stage 4: UV disinfection system
